Okay today I got an email from Debra Mansfield (Lady at church) stating some things you can do to support prop 8 & this one wasn't at all painful (not making phone calls or knocking on doors) just watch You Tube videos that are pro prop 8. Share, rate & comment on them so they will be spotlighted because only Anti prop 8 ones are being spotlighted. I guess the more you watch, share, rate & comment the better. These are considered favorites & are spotlighted. So here is my original comment in yellow type but it was 170 characters over so I had to edit, my condensed version follows in purple type its amazing how many characters you can save with deleting nearly all the punctuation. What I want to know is why can't a gay union be called something besides marriage? Marriage is a word. Why shouldn't the definition of "marriage" be "The legal union of a man and woman as husband and wife." I'm sure someone can come up with a word for "The legal union of a man and man as husband and husband" & another word for "The legal union of a woman and woman as wife and wife"... that way there would be no confusion, we would know exactly what the union consists of because like it or not these unions are different, we still call a male a man & a female a woman even after equal rights laws so why can't we come up with different words for different unions? I agree all the campain junk mail tv ads and rebuttals and rebuttalls on the rebutalls is getting old and the negative ad campains make me want to crawl into a cave til it's over
So this is an interesting idea and a great idea but there is a huge problem with it and is the fundamental reason why the anti gay marriage lobby doesnt propose it as a workable solution. the supreme court has already decided that separate is inherently unequal (brown v board of education) You cant provide separate legal standing for groups based on some conditional status. This basically means that if you legalize some form of domestic union for homosexuals and call it just as good as marriage you will be about 2 years from the court being required to allow gay marriage because separate is inherently unequal.
The better question is how does it hurt anyone to allow gays to marry? Its a legal standing it doesnt mean that the bishop has to do the ceremony or that gay couples get to sit on the pew next to you. How is marriage damaged by allowing those who find it just as valuable as you do (hence their need to fight for it) to enter into it. If you say that it devalues marriage then maybe you should pass a law that bans divorce because that is what is really trivializing marriage in society. Seriously, is the fire and brim stone going to start the moment two guys get hitched? I bet not since hundreds of same sex folks already have. I havent noticed any impact on the institution of marriage either. Anyone have a good rational reason why gays shouldnt marry (and because its a sin doesnt count as rational).
